Kym Bloom
My pieces are a combination of digital photography and several layers of media, including acrylic gel, dry and wet pigments, plaster, found objects, paint and resin. Coming from a background in film and digital art, I am always looking for ways to combine those forms with more traditional media. The process I use for my photo pieces results in a three-dimensional image that appears to float in the middle, often creating shadows through the crackled texture, which results from a reaction between the pigment in the photos and the acrylic gel used in transferring them to the surface. The final images end up not really looking like photographs at all and the image becomes the focus of the piece. I tend to gravitate toward images with bright colors and strong contrast, with subject matter ranging from flowers and fish to graffiti to street signs.
